Taken after student assaulted (left: Irini Agathagelou) by (right Kyle Kriel)
On Monday, April 7 stream of Facebook posts were made regarding a Varsity Cup rugby player Kyle Kriel assaulting a female student Irini Agathagelou who has since then suffered major injuries according to family members.
Since then the family members have helped the female student make her post go viral on Facebook. The family then have wanted further action to be taken.
Facebook post from family member:
On Monday my cousin Irini Agathagelou was assaulted by one of the UCT rugby players, Kyle Kriel. She suffered major injuries. Help me in sharing her story so that we can raise awareness against this! Some action NEEDS to be taken and he should be BANNED from the Varsity Cup due to the fact that the cup is a symbol for women and children’s rights. There is NEVER an excuse for a man to hit a woman and the fact that he did this to my cousin makes it personal!! Please help me share her story.
The female student after the event posted to Carte Blanche on Facebook about the event. Several days later the University of Cape Town were made aware of the allegations and have since then posted this response
The Ikeys Rugby Club are aware of an allegation of assault made on social media against one of our players.
We take the allegations seriously and will fully co-operate with an investigation.
While the processes are underway the player accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence, but if the accusation is proven we will take appropriate action.
When contacted for further commenting the family member who had helped the female student to ‘take the story further’ said “the family is dealing with things” and further videos regarding the event have been removed by the user.
enca went on to further release this story on Friday, April 11.
