I recently went to a Tsogo Tasting where eight executive chefs from around South Africa showcased their extraordinary eatery of diverse flavours. Hosted by Tsogo Sun at the Southern Sun Park’s Lucé restaurant it was exquisite view meets delicious food and friends with lots of chatter.
The selection of eight tasting portions of the signature dishes was presented and prepared by the chefs and perfectly paired with wines from the Lucé cellar.
First tickling our taste buds was a Mollusco presented by chef Greg Gautier of Lucé at Southern Sun Hyde Park and host of the Tasting Table the dish comprised of Squid in scallop tortellini and red roe espuma, crab and sea bass sashimi and green grass sorbet.
Jade Sullaphen of Punchinello’s at Southern Sun Montecasino served guests with smoked chicken breast supreme. served with poached pear saffron, micro greens gorgonzola cheese and walnut crumble and red peppadew dressing.
Deena Naidoo of Aarya at SunSquare Montecasino prepared a chili garlic prawn and showcased his Durban flavours.
Amongst my favourite serving the Duck Calvados stole my palate. presented by Preshanthan Pillay of Back O The Moon at Gold Reef City. on the plate was a serving of roasted duck served on a layer of their famous calvados apple glaze.
Kenneth Ngubane of Jenda at Montecasino made grilled salmon served with steamed seasonal veggies, avo, cucumber and tomato salsa.
A South African food tasting experience is never complete if there’s no Durban styled lamb curry. Presented by chef Shaun Munro of Lingela at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani.
After the main meal comes dessert and wetting our sweet tooth was a spiced textured carrot cake by Garth Shnier of San at Sandton Sun. the dish was a Pistachio nut dacquoise with caramel spiced carrot, served with cardamon ice-cream with warm white chocolate ganache.
The star of the day had to be the bombshell Valrhona 5 chocolate bomb by Prenolan Naidoo of The Grill Jichana at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani.
