We have become so oblivious

Assignment 2_Column_Wolf on Wall Street

In the past few months I watched “The wolf on Wall Street” and it got me thinking is that the real life of a stock broker or people in business or is it purely a representation of how some people live their lives where drugs, alcohol and sex have become an addiction.

There were some scenes in the movie in which I could not handle and would expect one to definitely not sit comfortably in the movie house as they were occurring. However, what brought to my attention is the way the audience responded when these scenes occurred. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_Wg96edbBY

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort becomes so consumed in sales and in pursuit of being the ‘wolf’ on Wall Street. That is what starts affecting his family life, driving him to overdose on drugs and in turn drive off and damage his car, thereafter, having various fits at a local hotel.

We have become so oblivious towards the true reality of how destructive drugs, alcohol, and sex can be. I for one immediately made a sole decision after the movie to never touch a wine glass, and let alcohol take control.

More than 11% of the South Africans population are addicted and topping the list of addictions is alcohol, marijuana and cocaine.  Central Drug Authority statistics of South Africa show substance abuse is double the average amount in South African than global.  It is ranked in the top 10 countries with regards to the amount of alcohol consume each year.

How do we not become desensitised to alcoholism and drugs. Many movies often try to be informative due to how modern society consumes life lessons. However, society continues to be unaware of the real implications drugs have on people. To what extremities should drugs, alcoholism and sex be, before you change your views on it?
